The Daily Nole — Sept. 19, 2016: FSU Soccer Blanks Miami to Open ACC Play

Larry Novey/FSU athletics

For as bad as Saturday was for Florida State fans, Sunday was much better as two FSU teams in action took home victories. As always, Mondays are a busy day as the ACC will announce players of the week and game times for the Oct. 1 football games. We’ll keep you posted throughout the day with the latest developments regarding FSU athletics.

Lead Story

Florida State’s soccer team began conference play on the right foot Sunday with a 1-0 victory over rival Miami. Not surprisingly, the lone Seminole goal came off the foot of Deyna Castellanos.

The goal came in the 20th minute and was assisted by Hayley Grant. Cassie Miller finished with four saves for the Seminoles as FSU improved to 7-1 on the season. Each Florida State victory this season has come by shutout. FSU will be back in action on Thursday at home against Wake Forest.

Between the Lines

In addition to the soccer victory, FSU’s volleyball team went to Baton Rogue and beat LSU in straight sets, 26-24, 25-20, 25-18. Milica Kubura led the Seminoles with eight kills while Cecile Woie had a match-high 12 digs.

At the Olympia Fields Invitational in Illinois, the FSU men’s golf team finished fifth out of 15 teams at 27 over. Illinois won the tournament, shooting 5 over. The third through sixth place teams were separated by just four strokes.

On the Agenda

There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Monday.

News and Notes

Florida State’s Oct. 1 contest against North Carolina will kick off at 3:30 p.m. EST. The game will air on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

FSU’s men’s cross country team held firm at No. 2 in the South Region of the USTFCCCA rankings behind only Ole Miss. The FSU women climbed up to No. 2 in the region.

FSU outside hitter Milica Kubura was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week for her performances against Florida and LSU. Kubura totaled 27 kills over the two matches.
