The Daily Nole — May 12, 2018: FSU Softball Goes for Fifth Straight ACC Crown

Lead Story

Florida State will aim for a fifth straight ACC Tournament title on Saturday as the top-seeded Seminoles take on No. 2 seed Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship.

FSU advanced with a 6-1 win over Notre Dame in the ACC semifinals on Friday. The Panthers defeated third-seeded North Carolina in the other semifinal, 3-0.

It was Pittsburgh who snapped FSU’s 36-game ACC winning streak with a 1-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader back on April 6. The Seminoles still managed to take the series. Saturday’s title contest airs at 12 p.m. EST on ESPN.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU softball, FSU track and field continued the ACC Championships on Friday. FSU women’s tennis opened the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 win while the men opened the tournament by beating Alabama State by an identical 4-0 score. FSU baseball defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 12-2.

On the Agenda

Aside from the ACC Softball Championship, FSU track and field wraps up the ACC Championships. FSU men’s tennis continues the NCAA Tournament against Alabama while the women play at Florida. FSU baseball hosts Mount St. Mary’s in a doubleheader with contests beginning at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

Florida State men’s tennis senior Guy Iradukunda was named one of five recipients of the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award.

FSU softball scored five runs over the final two innings to knock off Pittsburgh for a fifth straight ACC title, 5-4.

FSU baseball took the first game of a doubleheader over Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, 10-0. The Noles won the second game, 8-2.

FSU women’s tennis upset rival Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, 4-3.

FSU men’s track and field claimed the ACC Outdoor Championship title on Saturday. The FSU women finished third.

FSU men’s tennis was upset by Alabama in the second round of the tournament, 4-2.
