Seminoles Break Losing Streak, Defeat Stetson 4-0

The Florida State Seminoles broke a 5-game losing streak and defeated the Stetson Hatters 4-0 at Dick Howser Stadium on Tuesday night. FSU improves to 25-12 and will go for the 2-game sweep on Wednesday.

The Good: Relief pitching for FSU finally succeeded on Tuesday night. C.J. Van Eyk went for four shutout innings following Andrew Karp, giving up no hits and striking out four batters. Karp probably had the better performance all things considered, but given how Florida State’s relief pitching has collapsed in the past few games, this was much-needed.

The Bad: Stetson’s mid-game pitching was all over the place. The Hatters could not find the strike zone and pretty much handed the Seminoles four runs. In just the fifth and sixth innings alone, Stetson surrendered six walks and had two wild pitches allow runners to advance. There are few worse feelings than controlling a team at the plate only to give up runs through mistakes.

The Ugly: Wanted any hits on Tuesday night? Well too bad. The two teams combined for a sluggish five hits and both finished below a .150 overall average. Two of those hits came very late in the game when a Stetson comeback looked impossible. Florida State had even shuffled its lineup for Tuesday’s game in hopes of jump-starting the offense. It’s safe to say it wasn’t the hitting that won them the game, which is a very concerning trend right now.

Studs of the Game: Andrew Karp started the game for Florida State and delivered one of his best outings of the season. He went for five innings, gave up no earned runs, and struck out nine. Steven Wells delivered the one exciting play of the game with a home run to left. Austin Bogart was the one notable Hatter after pitching for over two innings and giving up no earned runs.

Duds of the Game: How about everyone in the Stetson and FSU lineups sans Wells?

Extra Innings: There is a spider that has made a web on one of the press box windows. It is about the size of a dime and has a black and yellow striped pattern. Do any arachnologists read these post game articles? If so, please chime in about what this thing could be and if the FSU beat will gain superpowers (should it become irate).
