FSU Baseball: Extended Losings Streaks Few and Far Between During Martin Era

Florida State will look to get off the schneid Tuesday evening when it plays host to Stetson and to avoid tying a record streak under legendary head coach Mike Martin.

Heading into Tuesday night’s contest at Dick Howser Stadium, the Seminoles have lost five straight. Since dropping the final two games against Georgia Tech to conclude a 3-game series on April 7 and 8, FSU has lost at home to rival Florida and twice to Duke.

This marks just the fifth time in Martin’s 39 years as head coach in Tallahassee that the Seminoles have lost five straight. The first time it happened under Martin was in 1984 and the most recent occasion was in 2015.

The other 5-game skid during Martin’s tenure came in 2006. The longest losing streak of Martin’s tenure was six games back in 1999.

FSU will look to avoid equaling that streak when the Hatters come to town. Five of the six losses during the infamous streak in 1999 came to rival Miami. The other was to Georgia Tech.

It may be troublesome for some that this is the second 5-game losing streak in four seasons. During Martin’s first 35 years, it happened just three times.

Redshirt junior Andrew Karp will return to the rubber for FSU on Tuesday after weather scratched his scheduled Sunday start with Duke. Karp will look to stop the bleeding and keep the Seminoles from tying the longest losing streak of Martin’s tenure.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that the last time the Seminoles lost six straight games was also the year it came closest to winning the College World Series. The last time they lost five, they reached the NCAA Super Regional.
