Florida State Downs Jacksonville, 6-2

Florida State began Wednesday night’s game with a 5-run first inning against the Jacksonville Dolphins. The Seminoles never looked back, winning 6-2 in their midweek match-up. It was a resounding victory on a special night commemorating the Negro Leagues and the first African-American FSU athlete Fred Flowers.

The Good: Fans of the long ball had plenty to enjoy. The teams combined for five home runs all around the park. For the Seminoles, it included Cal Raleigh, Reese Albert, and Cooper Swanson. In a game that wasn’t as close as the score suggested, home runs have a way of keeping the fans involved.

The Bad: Jacksonville actually produced on offense. The Dolphins finished with 10 hits and a .286 overall average. Where it failed was turning those hits into runs, which FSU did in the first inning. Jacksonville was just 2-for-14 with runners on base and stranded nine of them.

The Ugly: Jacksonville’s starting pitcher Greg Shanahan may have had the worst start of any opponent so far. In the first inning alone he gave up five runs (including two home runs). He then started the second inning by allowing another home run to Swanson. To his credit, he didn’t allow another hit the rest of his time on the mound, but his disastrous start was brutal for his team’s chances.

Studs of the Game: Cal Raleigh looked fantastic Wednesday night with three hits, two RBIs, and a run. Angel Camacho of Jacksonville had two hits, including a solor home run. Pitcher Andrew Karp went seven innings for the Seminoles and gave up just two earned runs.

Duds of the Game: Shanahan is really the only dud of the game. Jacksonville’s pitching recovered after him, and Florida State had no obvious weak links.

Extra Innings: You’ve probably heard this before, but the Dolphins’ offense let them down.
