TALLAHASSEE — Florida State quarterback James Blackman has endured his fair share of difficulties over the course of the season, but a comfortable 77-6 win against overmatched Delaware State might be just what he needed.

Blackman passed for only 179 yards, but threw three touchdowns on 11 completions. The true freshman only threw four incompletion passes in a shortened outing.

“I think it will [help him],” head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “I think anytime you play well. Actually, he’s been in some battles and some wars in some great environments, and he’s going to be in one next week, that’s for sure.”

The Seminoles’ head coach also admitted that, while Blackman has done a good enough job stepping in for the injured Deondre Francois, an early “cupcake” game would have benefited the young quarterback.

“Would have made a big difference. People don’t understand that,” Fisher said. “Those games are very vital, just the cohesiveness, just to be able to go and do it with the lights on, and people don’t understand, but it’s big, and then also big to get all the young guys energy and let them know they can play in games and all that stuff. But it would have helped him.”
