Lead Story

Sports Illustrated finished its countdown of the nation’s top 100 college football players on Friday. The top player in all the land plays his ball in Tallahassee.

Redshirt sophomore safety Derwin James held the No. 1 overall spot, despite missing all but two games last season with a meniscus tear. James looked to be a full strength during FSU’s spring game as he was a constant pest for the Gold offense.

As a freshman in 2015, James recorded 91 total tackles, 9.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. James came down with his first career interception in last season’s Labor Day victory over Ole Miss.

Also making the list for FSU was cornerback Tarvarus McFadden at No. 19, defensive end Josh Sweat at No. 43, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi at No. 69, quarterback Deondre Francois at No. 91 and freshman running back Cam Akers at No. 99.
