The Daily Nole — Dec. 3, 2016: FSU Volleyball Takes on Florida in NCAA Tournament

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans and even though the Seminoles aren’t playing in Orlando for the ACC Championship, one FSU team is hoping to continue its championship hopes. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

After beating Cincinnati in four sets to open the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Florida State volleyball will now take on No. 11 national seed Florida on Saturday night with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line. The Gators advanced by wiping the floor with Alabama State in straight sets on Friday night, 25-15, 25-13, 25-9.

As they have all season, the combination of Carli Snyder and Alex Holston carried the Gators with a combined 27 kills. Snyder added a match-high 11 digs in the win. Carolina Knop has led Florida in that statistic this season. Florida comes in with a 27-3 record for the year.

After beating the Bearcats, FSU comes in with a record of 25-5. Katie Horton recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 26 digs and has been FSU’s most dependable player throughout the year. Milica Kubura has been dominant at the net for the Seminoles while Cecilie Woie leads the team in digs for the season.

Florida beat FSU in four sets when the teams met in Tallahassee on Sept. 14. Saturday’s match gets underway at 7:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.

Between the Lines

In addition to the FSU volleyball victory, the FSU swimming and diving teams fared well at the Georgia Invite. The men’s 200 meter free relay time qualified for the 2017 NCAA Championships while the women’s team set a new school-record time in the 400 medley relay.

On the Agenda

Outside of volleyball, the Seminoles will head back at the pool in Athens. The FSU men’s tennis team will host the Tallahassee Futures Tournament.

News and Notes

Donovan Peoples-Jones, the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the country, is in Tallahassee for his official FSU visit. Peoples-Jones is a 5-star prospect from Detroit and the No. 11 overall player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Clemson defeated Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, 42-35, giving Florida State hope for a New Year’s Six bowl berth.

Florida State rallied from two sets down to beat rival Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night and will move on to face Stanford.
