The Daily Nole — Dec. 2, 2016: FSU Volleyball Begins NCAA Tournament

It’s Friday, Florida State fans. We’ll do our best to keep you posted through the weekend on the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

Florida State volleyball will kick off the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Cincinnati in Gainesville. FSU went 24-5 this season while the Bearcats finished the regular season 22-9 and on a 6-match winning streak.

The Seminoles have been led this season by Katie Horton, who leads the team in service aces and ranks second on the team in digs and kills. Milica Kubura, a junior, is the kills leader for the Seminoles while Cecilie Woie leads the team with 446 digs. Jordan Thompson leads Cincinnati in kills while Abby Williams leads the Bearcats in digs.

Cincinnati was just 3-4 on a neutral court this season while FSU was 2-1. The only common opponent for the two teams was UCF. The Seminoles beat the Knights in Orlando to open the season. The Bearcats went 2-0 against UCF.

The winner of Friday’s match will go on to face either No. 11 national seed Florida or Alabama State on Saturday. The match begins at 4:30 p.m. EST and will air on ESPN3.

Between the Lines

There were no FSU athletic events scheduled for Thursday.

On the Agenda

Aside from the FSU volleyball match, the Seminoles’ swimming and diving team will compete in the Georgia Fall Invite in Athens.

News and Notes

Florida State defensive end DeMarcus Walker was among six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.

USA Today projected seven FSU players to be selected in its 2017 NFL Mock Draft. Some of those listed are underclassmen who have not yet declared.

FSU cornerback Tarvarus McFadden was named winner of the Jack Tatum Award on Friday. The award annually goes to the nation’s top defensive back.

The ACC not only won the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on the men’s side, but it did so on the women’s side as well. Both challenges resulted in 9-5 wins for the ACC. In the women’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the ACC is 7-0-3 all-time.

The Florida State soccer trio of Cassie Miller, Kirsten Crowley and Natalia Kuikka all earned NSCAA All-American honors. Miller was a first team selection, Crowley was selected to the second team and Kuikka was a third team selection.

FSU volleyball defeated Cincinnati in four sets to open the NCAA Tournament. Katie Horton led the Seminoles with 17 kills and 26 digs in the win.

Florida’s volleyball team defeated Alabama State in straight sets. The No. 11 Gators will host FSU on Saturday night.
