FSU-Northern Illinois: Game Balls

Florida State got back in the win column on Saturday with a 37-19 win over Northern Illinois to improve to 2-2 on the young season. The Seminoles also improved to 2-1 at home.

Considering the perceived trouble that FSU was in coming into the game, the victory was a complete team effort. Still, there were players in the win who stood above the others for FSU. Editor Mike Ferguson and lead writer Clint Eiland hand out their game balls to the best Seminoles in each phase of the game:

Offense

Mike: Deondre Francois, QB
Redshirt junior quarterback Deondre Francois struggled with some reads and did turn the ball over twice — one fumble and one interception — but passing for 352 yards while completing at nearly a 75 percent rate is an impressive day nonetheless. Francois finished the day with a pair of touchdown passes and set season-highs for completion percentage, yards, yards per pass attempt and passer rating.

Clint: Keith Gavin, WR
For the second week in a row, junior wide receiver Keith Gavin set a new career-high for receiving yards. Gavin hauled in six passes for 93 yards — both team-highs — on Saturday with a long reception of 39 yards. Gavin was targeted eight times.

Defense

Unanimous Game Ball: Kyle Meyers, CB
Junior cornerback Kyle Meyers continued to bolster his case for FSU’s defensive MVP on Saturday. Meyers finished with just two tackles, but both went for sacks as FSU got to Northern Illinois quarterback Marcus Childers four times as a team.

Special Teams

Unanimous Game Ball: Ricky Aguayo, K
After a rough start to the season, junior kicker Ricky Aguayo was money on Saturday. Aguayo was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, which included makes of 50 yards and two from 42 yards away. Aguayo was also a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.
