Your Thoughts Thursday: FSU Would Have Won the ACC Tournament

Much has changed since we posed the question, but this week’s The Daily Nole Poll surfaced around the scheduled ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament in Greensboro.

This week, we asked our social media followers how far top-seeded Florida State would have advanced in the ACC Tournament. As a result of the coronavirus, the 5-day tournament was called prior to FSU’s quarterfinal match-up with Clemson on Thursday afternoon.

Of the 71 accounts to respond this week, 38 percent said that the Seminoles would have won the championship. 34 percent had the Seminoles falling in the title game. 17 percent predicted that FSU would win just one game and fall in the ACC semifinals. Only 11 percent predicted that FSU would lose its quarterfinal match-up.

Our Take
With the contest called off, speculating how Florida State would have done seems useless.

Although it wasn’t the fashion that anyone would have wanted, FSU was recognized as the ACC champion. The Seminoles won the ACC regular season title and did so while playing the conference’s second- and third-place teams each twice.

It’s a disappointing way to end the ACC Tournament, but the cancellation takes nothing away from what head coach Leonard Hamilton and company accomplished. What remains to be seen is whether an NCAA Tournament is played.

A postponement seems like a best case scenario at this point, but should the big dance happen, FSU would be a threat to win it all. The Seminoles ascended to No. 4 in this week’s AP Poll — their highest ranking since December 1972.
