FSU TE Mavin Saunders to Transfer

The attrition that takes place every offseason has begun early for Florida State.

On Tuesday afternoon, redshirt junior tight end Mavin Saunders announced that he would be transferring elsewhere for his final season of eligibility.

After catching 16 passes for 234 yards over the prior two seasons, Saunders has gone without a catch for the Seminoles this season. Arguably the most athletic of the FSU tight ends at 6-foot-5 and nearly 260 pounds, Saunders had made his fair share of plays as a pass-catcher, but never excelled as a blocker.

In addition to his production on the field, Saunders had been recognized for his work off of it. Saunders was previously recognized as a scholar athlete for his performance in the classroom and for his mentoring at Riley Elementary in Tallahassee.

With the subtraction of Saunders, FSU will have four scholarship tight ends on the roster in starter Ryan Izzo, a current redshirt junior, sophomore Naseir Upshur and freshmen Tre’ McKitty and Alexander Marshall.

Saunders was a project when he came in. He did a great job catching the ball, but he was a liability in the running game. McKitty, though not as big, also has great hands, and has a mean streak. FSU has rarely carried so many TE’s. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Upshur transfer as well. He hasn’t played much either.
