TALLAHASSEE — It took until mid-November, but Florida State finally looks to have a legitimate punt returner.

D.J. Matthews, who took over punt return duties following Tarvarus McFadden’s nightmarish performance against Boston College, solidified his role as the No. 1 punt returner with his performance against Delaware State on Saturday. The freshman from Jacksonville, Florida racked up 138 yards on five returns in a 77-6 victory.

His 47-yard return was the first of two that went for more than 40 yards.

“He had space and he’s dynamic. He will be a really, really – have a chance to be a really good player if he’ll continue to work and do the right things, and I think he can be a heck of a receiver,” head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “He’s got tremendous ball skills. He’s starting to grow up and do the things he has to do. When I say grow up, just mature from being here. He’s a true freshman.”

Fisher confirmed soon after that Matthews is more comfortable in the role, and his performance on Saturday only backed up what his head coach had to say.

“Oh, no doubt,” Fisher said, when asked if Matthews is more comfortable in the role. “No doubt.”

Matthews should have numerous opportunities to build off his performance when the Seminoles travel to Gainesville to face rival Florida. Gators’ punter Johnny Townsend set the Florida record for career punts on Saturday with 232.
