FSU at Wake Forest: Gameday Quick Hits

Mitch White/FSU athletics

Florida State will look to avoid going winless for September on Saturday as the 0-2 Seminoles travel to BB&T Field to take on Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are off to a 4-0 start and looking to make a major statement in front of their home crowd.

Florida State won last year’s contest by a 17-6 score and had to hold on in its last trip to Winston-Salem. Tyler Hunter saved that contest with an interception in the end zone in the game’s final minutes to preserve a 24-16 victory. In what will be our final piece prior to the 3:30 p.m. EST kickoff, we give you some quick facts surrounding the ACC showdown:

  • Wake Forest has not started 5-0 since its ACC title season of 2006. FSU has not started 0-3 since legendary head coach Bobby Bowden’s first year on the job in 1976.
  • Wake Forest was the only team ever to shut out Bowden at home, winning 30-0 in 2006.
  • Wake Forest is just one of two ACC schools to beat the Seminoles in three straight seasons since FSU joined the conference in 1992. Wake won three straight from 2006-08. The other school to do so is Clemson from 2005-07.
  • The only tie between FSU and Wake Forest came in the first meeting between the schools back in 1956 in Tallahassee, 14-14.
  • Since the ACC went to divisions in 2005, Wake Forest is the only Atlantic division team to win the conference other than FSU and Clemson.
  • Wake Forest’s last victory over a team ranked in either poll came against FSU in 2011. The Seminoles enter Saturday ranked 25th in the Amway Coaches Poll.
  • Florida State has never started 0-2 in ACC play in consecutive years. That would be the case with a loss to Wake. The Seminoles have started 0-2 in conference just three times ever. Two of those times have come under current head coach Jimbo Fisher.
  • Wake Forest hasn’t started 2-0 in ACC play since 2011.
  • Florida State has won seven straight games in the state of North Carolina. The last win came in Raleigh last season over N.C. State, 24-20. The last loss also came in Raleigh to the Wolfpack, 17-16, in 2012.
  • With a Wake Forest loss, head coach Dave Clawson would join Al Golden, Dave Doeren and Steve Addazio as the only coaches to lose to FSU in four straight seasons under Fisher.
  • James Blackman becomes the first FSU quarterback to make his first career road start at Wake Forest since E.J. Manuel in 2009.
