Florida State lost the series opener to Wake Forest by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. This was the conclusion of the game that started on Friday afternoon, but got postponed due to inclement weather. The Seminoles bounced back later that night with a 4-0 victory in the second game off a huge day from starting pitcher Tyler Holton.

First Game (3:30 p.m. EST)

The Good: Wake Forest pitching picked up right where it left off on Friday. Starting pitcher Parker Dunshee lasted four innings and tallied six strikeouts along with two earned runs. From there, Colin Peluse and Griffin Roberts finished out the game. They combined to allow just two hits and one earned run the rest of the way.

The Bad: Cole Sands clearly has the ability to be a good pitcher. But games like these exemplify his worst trait: inconsistency. Through three innings, Sands did not allow a single hit for Wake Forest. Then the fourth inning came around and he gave up four hits and three earned runs. He was pulled in the fifth inning after giving up his second home run of the day.

The Ugly: Bad weather forced the first game of the series to be divided into two days. It throws both of the teams out of rhythm, especially when they know they have to play another game shortly afterwards. It just so happens that this series was a crucial one for the Seminoles.

Studs of the Game: Multiple players hit home runs in game one. For Wake Forest, that included Stuart Fairchild and Gavin Sheets, who have now combined for 31 home runs on the year. Florida State joined in with Tyler Holton and his 2-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Duds of the Game: Cole Sands allowed five hits and four earned runs in a little over four innings as pitcher. Dylan Busby was quiet at the plate with three at-bats but two strikeouts.

Second Game (6 p.m. EST)

The Good: Florida State’s pitching was excellent on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Holton went a full nine innings and gave up just four hits. He struck out nine batters and allowed zero earned runs. Wake Forest was shutout on the scoreboard, and it cemented how valuable Holton is in the lineup.

The Bad: Wake Forest’s pitching was unable to recover from a bad start. Florida State brought in four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Wake Forest’s starting pitcher Donnie Sellers lasted six innings, and did comparatively better the rest of the way with only one more hit allowed. But the slow start in the first doomed the Demon Deacons.

The Ugly: Wake Forest was unable to get any production at the plate in the second game. In a combined 31 at-bats, the Demon Deacons only totaled four hits. That translates to a .129 overall hitting mark.

Studs of the Game: Tyler Holton is an obvious choice after pitching a complete game shutout. When it came to hitting, Quincy Nieporte was able to record one hit, two RBIs, and one run himself.

Duds of the Game: Donnie Sellers and his slow start with four hits in the first inning put him on this list. He fell to 3-5 on the season after the loss.
