Florida State’s Tyler Holton is undefeated no more. Despite a late attempt at a rally, Holton took his first loss of the year as the Seminoles dropped the second game of the series to N.C. State on Saturday night in Raleigh, 4-3.

The Seminoles trailed 4-0 early before pulling to within one and then pushing the tying run into scoring position with no outs in the ninth inning. Florida State however, was unable to complete the comeback and will face the Wolfpack in the rubber game on Sunday.

The Good: It was a day of redemption for the Florida State bullpen and N.C. State infielder Evan Mendoza. After an 0-for-3 night at the plate and two errors in the field, Mendoza set the tone on Saturday with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first. The FSU bullpen bounced back from allowing four runs on Friday to pitch 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief on Saturday.

The Bad: After pounding out 16 hits on Friday, Florida State managed just five on Saturday night. First baseman Drew Mendoza also committed his fourth error in just seven games.

The Ugly: Florida State’s rally attempt looked to be in good shape, but fizzled in disappointing fashion in the ninth inning. After the first two men reached base, J.C. Flowers popped out to first before Rhett Aplin grounded into a 4-3 double play to end the threat and the game.

Studs of the Game: In addition to Evan Mendoza, who was 2-for-4 with the aforementioned blast, N.C. State catcher Brad Debo was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Aplin had a 2-run home run in the seventh inning for Florida State.

Duds of the Game: FSU’s Taylor Walls and Cal Raleigh were a combined 0-for-6 with a pair of walks. Shane Shepard and Will Wilson were a combined 0-for-6 for the Wolfpack.
