So the other boards are making a lot of noise about the Saturday Night Lights event at FSU this evening. Looks like DE Kayvon Thibodeaux and LB Nakobe Dean will make it. Man, if Taggart could pull in just one of those guys, but maybe both!

I hate the way this sounds, but you know what’s interesting about all this? It’s the prospect that some of these players might be interested in coming to FSU because this is a chance to have the first national championship for division one/BCS/CFP with a black head coach. Not saying that should be a motivating factor, just that for some people, it might be. I mean, even Barack Obama said some people voted for him strictly because he was black, so it’s certainly not as though this would be any kind of stretch.

Personally I think Taggart is a damn good coach, even if his record over the past few years seems less than splendiferous, but let’s face it: Some black kids would prefer a black coach, all else being equal. Not sure I wouldn’t feel the same way if I were black – I’ve often thought being that much a minority has to be kind of a drag in some respects – so who am I to criticize?

The real key for Taggart as a head coach, though, is who he hires for his assistants and position coaches. I always thought it was funny to hear the criticism of Bobby Bowden as a CEO-type head coach. My response was, “it’s his job to hire the right people and let them do their jobs. If he was a micromanager, you’d complain he was a control freak.”

I get the feeling most people like the staff Taggart has assembled, so it seems he’s on his way. I still think you have to have better than a good QB to win it all unless you’re Alabama, and I’m not sure we have anyone on the roster or coming in via the 2019 class, but I do think our fortunes at QB should be shifting somewhat. It’s just going to take two years to get both the QB and the offensive line situations straightened out. ‘Til then, we’re going to struggle to get past Clemson.

So this SNL business might spark some real stuff for the 2019 class, which will tell us a lot about how the next few years will unfurl for this program. It’ll be interesting. I’ll also be watching to see how Fisher does at A&M – not trying to stir up a bee’s nest here, but I do think his approach has a pretty good chance to work at a school like that – but if Taggart works out, we FSU fans will have to admit we’ve had some pretty spectacular coaching luck.

Nice post scribe. I agree with everything you’ve said.

The only thing I would add is that a coach’s color isn’t as important as how the coach relates to the players and their families. Color can be part of that equation though. It’s said that Bobby was so successful recruiting because of his ability to talk plain with moms and grandmothers, and his sincerity. It’s said that Dabo has that same quality, and makes the program feel like family. Jimbo is an excellent recruiter, but for him it’s more like a business. That works better for some kids.
