I was happy when he was hired. I knew he had a project in front of him. That being said, he has completely s*** the bed. The team is full of four and five-star players, and it’s a dumpster fire.

I have no confidence in him anymore, either. This losing streak to end the season (there’s no chance in Hell we beat either BC or Florida, after all) is going to just destroy recruiting. Get ready for five years (possibly more) of sheer futility.

Willie definitely underachieved. There was plenty of talent, except at OL and LB, and Willie could have changed the culture before the season. A lot of first year coaches had that challenge. Even the OL and LB group had highly recruited guys. There’s no excuse for not being able to line up, false starts, and stupid unsportsman like conduct penalties. Willie choosing to start Francois, and doubling down on that after NC State, was a bad idea. I know Willie was worried Francois would leave, but it was dumb to worry about that, and to worry about Blackman having eligibility 3 years from now.

Willie is also responsible for Hampton, who did an incredibly bad job as Special Teams coach.

All that said, Willie was the right hire under the circumstances. He isn’t going anywhere for another season, so I will judge him based on the changes he makes.

Willie handed play calling to Bell. and we saw a lot less east-west, which was good. Hampton was reportedly pushed out with a few games left, which was good.

We need to see how Willie recruits, and see what changes are made to the coaching staff. I’ll do a separate post about players and 2019.

IT’s national signing day. Lost Howell to UNC in the early period. That’s a strike against Willie.

Lost Walt Bell but got Kendall Briles. Net plus.
    Hampton is gone. Net Plus.
Got Ron Dugans and David Kelly moved to Recruiting Coordinator. Net Plus.
Got a Richards, OL transfer from Northern Illinois. Net Plus.
Got Jordan Travis, QB transfer from Louisville. Neutral, unless he gets a waiver to play immediately.

Deondre Francois kicked off the team. Major net plus.

Now we’ll have to see how this recruiting class works out. FSU will probably finish in the 14 – 16 range for the class. The blue chip ratio is relatively low, but not horrible after the dumpster fire 2018 season.

For the recruiting class to even be mediocre, Cross has to sign. It appears he’s wavering, with his father pushing Penn State.

No QB in the class for second year in a row, and also losing Hockman to transfer makes this really, really bad for the future. UM will likely have 5 scholarship QB’s eligible for 2019. Nolan McDonald is a capable walk-on, but that’s still not enough depth.

I think it’s likely that Akers gets reps kind of like Anquan Boldin back in the day. I’ll bet John Franklin wishes he was born 3 or 4 years later.

Bobby is probably wondering what the heck is going on. Jimbo is probably laughing his ass off.
