FSU Women’s Swimming and Diving: Hulkko Earns All-American Honors

The women’s portion of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships didn’t bring a lot of acclaim for Florida State as a team, but one Seminole made history during the event.

Ida Hulkko finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke to earn first-team All-American honors in Austin. In the process, Hulkko became the first FSU woman ever to compete in an individual swimming final as a freshman and the first since diver Tiffany Manning in 2002 to earn All-American status as a freshman.

That would be the only All-American honor for FSU during the 4-day event, although the Seminoles did have top-20 finishes in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relay. FSU finished 17th in the 200, narrowly missing second-team All-American honors.

As a team, FSU finished 34th overall with 14 points. Stanford claimed a third straight team title, finishing ahead of rival California, Michigan, Louisville and Texas. The event wrapped up on Saturday evening.

The FSU men will compete in the NCAA Championships, beginning on Wednesday and lasting through Saturday.
