Happy Labor Day, Florida State fans.

As you’re enjoying your long weekend, check out our daily rundown.

Lead Story

The season didn’t begin with victory for Florida State football, but the Seminoles fought valiantly before falling to No. 9 Notre Dame in overtime at Doak Campbell Stadium on Sunday night, 41-38.

FSU trailed 38-20 entering the fourth quarter before rallying with a touchdown pass from Jordan Travis to Andrew Parchment and a touchdown run by Treshaun Ward. Ryan Fitzgerald connected on a 43-yard field goal in the final minute to tie the game, but his 37-yard miss in overtime would prove costly. Notre Dame’s Jonathan Doerer ended the contest with a 41-yard make.

FSU finished with 441 yards of offense, but did commit three turnovers. Jashuan Corbin rushed for a career-high 144 yards, which included an 89-yard touchdown. Travis threw two touchdowns, but was intercepted three times. After Travis lost his helmet in the fourth quarter, McKenzie Milton took over and led two scoring drives.

Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan passed for 366 yards — a record for a Fighting Irish passer in a season opener — and four touchdowns. Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer led all receivers with nine catches for 120 yards. Defensively, Jermaine Johnson had 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss for FSU. Isaiah Foskey added two sacks for the Fighting Irish.

The loss for FSU is its fifth straight in a season opener. The Seminoles will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Jacksonville State.
