It’s Friday, Florida State fans.

Before you start thinking about the weekend, check out our daily rundown.

Lead Story

Defense was not a strength for Florida State last season, but there are at least two big reasons that could be different in 2021.

Those two reasons were each named to the Lombardi Award watch list on Thursday. Linebacker Amari Gainer and defensive end Jermaine Johnson were each included on the list that annually goes to the nation’s best lineman or linebacker.

Gainer was the top tackler for the Seminoles last season, totaling 65 stops including five for loss and a forced fumble. Johnson, a Georgia transfer, recorded four sacks for the Bulldogs last season, but has shined early on for FSU.

Annually awarded since 1970, Gainer and Johnson each hope to become the third FSU player to earn the honor. Previous winners are Marvin Jones in 1992 and Jamal Reynolds in 2000.
