Seminole Sunday Summary: Bobby Bowden Diagnosed with Terminal Illness

Florida State athletics

Despite plenty of good athletic news, it was a sad week for the Florida State athletic family.

Legendary former head football coach Bobby Bowden announced that he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Now 91 years old, Bowden released a statement to news outlets.

“I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come,” Bowden said in the statement. “My wife Ann and our family have been life’s greatest blessing.

“I am at peace.”

A legendary football coach, Bowden won 377 games in 34 seasons as FSU’s head man. He took the Seminoles to 12 ACC championships, two national titles and from 1987 to 2000, 14 straight top-5 finsihes.

As good as Bowden was as a coach, those who knew him would say he was a better human being. The field at Doak Campbell Stadium is named in his honor.
