The Daily Nole — May 27, 2021: FSU Baseball Gets Blasted by Duke to Open ACC Tournament

Lead Story

Florida State baseball’s ACC title hopes were dashed before they ever got started. In their ACC Tournament opener on Wednesday, the fifth-seeded Seminoles were blasted by No. 9 seed Duke, 12-1.

FSU trailed 5-0 before it could even record an out on Wednesday in Charlotte. Duke catcher Michael Rothenberg’s grand slam highlighted the 5-run first, but the Blue Devils’ offense never stopped.

Erikson Nichols was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for Duke. Ethan Murray also homered for the Blue Devils in the victory.

FSU’s lone run came on a solo homer by Robby Martin. Martin had two of the four hits for the Seminoles.

The loss eliminates FSU from championship contention. The Seminoles will wrap up the ACC Tournament on Friday against Miami.

In addition to the ACC Tournament, FSU track and field began the NCAA East Preliminaries on Wednesday.

FSU track and field will resume the NCAA East Preliminaries on Thursday. FSU softball begins the Baton Rouge Super Regional against LSU. The contest begins at 7 p.m. ET and airs on ESPN.

News and Notes

FSU beach volleyball pairs of Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz and Alaina Chacon and Maddie Anderson were named All-Americans by Volleyball Magazine. Van Winden and Rutz were first-team selections. Chacon and Anderson made the second team.

FSU women’s hoops has hired Craig Carter as an assistant coach.

FSU women’s tennis finishes seventh in the final ITA rankings.
