The Daily Nole — May 25, 2021: FSU’s Nelson, Messick Earn ACC Awards

Lead Story

The ACC handed out its 2021 baseball awards on Monday and Florida State was well-represented.

Catcher Matheu Nelson took home ACC Player of the Year honors. This season, Nelson hit .339 and led the conference with 22 home runs and 63 RBIs. Nelson is the first FSU player to win the honor since DJ Stewart in 2014.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Parker Messick took home both ACC Pitcher of the Year and ACC Freshman of the Year honors. For the season, Messick is 6-2 with a 3.30 ERA in 79 innings. Messick ranks second in the ACC with 114 strikeouts.

Nelson and Messick were each named first-team All-ACC selections. Pitcher Bryce Hubbart and outfielder Robby Martin each made the third team. Hubbart and Messick also represented the Seminoles on the ACC’s All Freshman team.

Between the Lines

FSU women’s golf wrapped up stroke play in the NCAA Championships in ninth place on Monday. The season ends for the Seminoles with their best finish ever.

On the Agenda

There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Tuesday.

News and Notes

In the Baseball America Poll, FSU fell five spots to No. 17. The slide in the D1Baseball Poll was seven spots to 23rd. FSU is now unranked in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. FSU fell eight spots to No. 24 in the NCBWA Poll.
