The Daily Nole — May 18, 2021: FSU Soccer Loses to Santa Clara on PKs in National Championship

Lead Story

Florida State soccer was seven minutes away from a third national championship in seven years, but couldn’t hold the lead on Monday night. For the third straight match, the top-seeded Seminoles went to penalty kicks, but this time, they were unable to emerge.

Against Santa Clara in the National Championship on Monday night, FSU led 1-0 on a goal by Jenna Nighswonger in the 63rd minute, but an errant pass in the 84th minute allowed Kelsey Turnbow to tie the game for the Broncos. After two overtime periods, Santa Clara won 4-1 on penalty kicks.

FSU didn’t miss on penalty kicks in either of its prior two matches, but Clara Robbins and Emily Madril each hit the post of their attempts. The Broncos didn’t miss. After three straight makes, Izzy D’Aquila clinched the match for Santa Clara.

The loss will serve as the only one of the season for FSU who finishes 13-1-2.

Between the Lines

In addition to the national championship, FSU men’s golf began the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee on Monday. Through the first day, the Seminoles are in first place with a 6-stroke lead over Georgia Tech.

FSU men’s golf will continue the Tallahassee Regional on Tuesday.

News and Notes

FSU baseball moved up one spot to No. 12 in the Baseball America Poll and one spot to No. 16 in the D1Baseball Poll. The Seminoles remained 30th in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. In the NCBWA Poll, FSU climbed one spot to No. 16.
