The Daily Nole — May 14, 2021: FSU Soccer Beats Virginia on PKs, On to National Championship

Lead Story

For the second straight match, Florida State soccer neither scored nor allowed a goal in 110 minutes of soccer. For the second straight match, the top-seeded Seminoles won on penalty kicks to advance, 3-0.

FSU clinched its spot in Monday’s national championship by beating Virginia on Thursday evening in the College Cup. After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Seminoles and Cavaliers went to penalty kicks scoreless. That’s where freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque shined.

After a miss high on the first shot from Virginia, Roque made saves on shots from Diana Ordonez and Taryn Torres. For the second straight match, the Seminoles were perfect on penalty kicks. Following makes by Clara Robbins and Emily Madril, Gabby Carle found the back of the net to clinch the victory.

FSU held just a 10-9 shot advantage, but the Cavaliers actually got more shots on goal. The Seminoles will face Santa Clara for the national title on Monday. Santa Clara topped North Carolina in the other College Cup match in Cary, N.C. by a 3-1 score.

Between the Lines

In addition to the College Cup, FSU softball kicked off the ACC Tournament with a 2-0 win over NC State. FSU track and field began the ACC Outdoor Championships.

On the Agenda

FSU track and field will resume the ACC Outdoor Championships on Friday. FSU softball will take on Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals. The contest begins at 3:30 p.m. ET and airs on ACC Network. FSU baseball plays host to Clemson. That contest begins at 6 p.m. ET and also airs on ACC Network.

News and Notes

The United Soccer Coaches named FSU’s soccer staff as the Atlantic Region Staff of the Year.

FSU men’s golf’s John Pak was named a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award.

FSU soccer had four players named All-Americans by United Soccer Coaches. Jaelin Howell and Malia Berkely made the first team while Emily Madril made the second team. Yujie Zhao made the third team.

FSU soccer forward Kristina Lynch won the NCAA Elite 90 Award, which recognizes athletic and academic achievement.

FSU basketball’s M.J. Walker officially declared for the NBA Draft on Thursday.
