The Daily Nole — April 1, 2021: FSU Baseball Uses 8-Run Seventh to Top Mercer

Lead Story

One big inning was the difference on Wednesday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Florida State baseball snapped a 2-game losing streak with an 8-1 home victory over Mercer.

The contest was scoreless through six innings before Mercer broke through with a solo home run from Brandon Michie in the top of the seventh. FSU answered with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Elijah Cabell got the scoring started for FSU with a 2-run home run. He would also cap the scoring with a 2-run single later in the inning. Wyatt Crowell tripled home a run before Vince Smith added an RBI sacrifice fly. Tyler Martin added an RBI single before scoring on a wild pitch.

The home run was the only hit that FSU starting pitcher Jack Anderson gave up in 6.2 innings. He struck out six in the win. Clayton Kwiatkowski retired four of the five batters he faced to pick up the victory.

FSU will remain home this weekend to begin a 3-game series against North Carolina. It begins on Friday at 6 p.m. ET and will stream on ACC Network Extra.

FSU baseball’s victory was the lone contest scheduled for Wednesday.

FSU volleyball will host Syracuse on Thursday. The contest begins at 5 p.m. ET and streams on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU track and field’s Shanice Love was named ACC Women’s Co-Field Performer of the Week.

Florida State beach volleyball’s Sara Putt and Cassie Anderson were named CCSA Pair of the Week.

Instead of taking on NC State on Saturday, FSU volleyball will now face Syracuse on Friday and Saturday.

FSU men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton has successfully undergone surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles’ tendon.

Kicker Zane Smith has committed to FSU football as part of its 2021 class.
