The Daily Nole — March 12, 2021: FSU Hoops Advances to ACC Semis Following Cancellation

Lead Story

Florida State basketball’s ACC Tournament quarterfinal contest with Duke, set for Thursday, was canceled. Fortunately for the Seminoles, they will advance.

The contest was called off due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Blue Devils’ program. Duke will end its season with a record of 13-11 and miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995.

No. 2 seed FSU moves on to the ACC Tournament semifinals to take on sixth-seeded North Carolina. The Tar Heels advanced with an 81-73 victory over No. 3 seed Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

FSU and North Carolina split a pair of meetings during the regular season with each winning at home. Friday’s semifinal in Greensboro begins at 9 p.m. ET and airs on ESPN. The winner will take on either top-seeded Virginia or No. 4 seed Georgia Tech for the ACC Championship.

Between the Lines

FSU softball defeated Arizona on Thursday night in Tallahassee, 4-2.

On the Agenda

In addition to FSU basketball’s ACC Tournament contest with North Carolina, FSU track and field will begin the NCAA Indoor Championships. FSU women’s tennis visits Boston College while the men play at NC State. On the diamond, FSU baseball visits Virginia Tech in a contest that begins at 4 p.m. ET and airs on ACC Network Extra. FSU softball will host Arizona at 6 p.m. ET in a contest that also streams on ACC Network Extra. FSU volleyball hosts Notre Dame at 5 p.m. ET in a match that streams on ACC Network Extra.

FSU hoops is currently listed as a 3-point favorite over North Carolina.

ESPN’s Charlie Creme currently has the FSU women listed as a No. 9 seed.
