The Daily Nole — Feb. 13, 2021: FSU Softball Opens Season with Pair of Wins

Lead Story

Florida State softball kicked off the 2021 season on Friday by taming a pair of Tigers in the JoAnne Graf Classic. The Seminoles beat Memphis and Missouri by a combined 18-2 score.

In the first game, a 9-0 win over Memphis, FSU needed just five innings and allowed just one hit. Cassidy Davis was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs before Kiersten Landers delivered the big blow with a grand slam during a 6-run fourth.

FSU concluded the day with a 9-2 win over Missouri. The contest was tied 2-2 through 4 1/2 innings before the Seminoles pushed across four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Elizabeth Mason homered for FSU in the victory. Sydney Sherrill drove in three runs while Josie Muffley and Devyn Flaherty were each 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Hatti Moore and Kim Wert each hit solo home runs for the Tigers.

Now 2-0 on the young season, FSU will play both teams again on Saturday on ACC Network Extra. FSU faces Memphis at 10 a.m. ET and Missouri at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Between the Lines

In addition to the JoAnne Graf Classic, FSU track and field opened the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas on Friday. FSU women’s tennis topped North Florida 4-0 while the men fell to Auburn, 4-2.

On the Agenda

In addition to the two JoAnne Graf Classic contests, FSU track and field will wrap up the Tyson Invitational on Saturday. FSU men’s hoops will host Wake Forest in a contest that begins at 12 p.m. ET and airs on Raycom Sports Network. FSU men’s tennis hosts Tulane while FSU volleyball hosts Clemson in a doubleheader.

FSU hoops is currently listed as a 13-point favorite over Wake Forest.
