The Daily Nole — Dec. 2, 2020: FSU Women Knock Off Florida in Opener

Florida State athletics

Happy hump day, Florida State fans.

We actually had action on the hardwood on Tuesday night. There will be more on Wednesday.

Lead Story

For the first time in more than a week, there was a Florida State athletic event. In that contest, the Seminoles did not disappoint.

FSU women’s basketball got the season off on the right foot on Tuesday night with an 81-75 victory over Florida. It served as the first win under interim head coach Brooke Wyckoff.

The Gators led by as many as eight early in the second quarter, but Savannah Wilkinson’s jumper at the buzzer gave FSU a 39-37 advantage at the break. The last Florida lead came midway through the third quarter, but FSU answered with a 12-4 run and never trailed again. FSU led by as many as 11 in the final quarter before free throws by Valencia Myers and a jumper by Morgan Jones helped put the game away.

Jones led FSU with a game-high 22 points while Myers, Bianca Jackson and Kourtney Weber all tallied 14 points. Myers grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the win.

Lavender Briggs paced Florida with 20 points. The Gators used the 3-point shot to hang around, going 11-for-27 from deep. FSU shot 46% from the field and dominated on the glass, finishing with 52 rebounds to 24 for Florida.

Between the Lines

FSU women’s hoops’ win over Florida was the lone scheduled athletic event for Tuesday.

On the Agenda

Florida State men’s basketball will open its season on Wednesday night against North Florida. The contest in Tallahassee will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will air on ACC Network.

News and Notes

FSU football will host Duke on Dec. 12 and travel to Wake Forest on Dec. 19, the ACC announced Tuesday.

FSU running back La’Damian Webb will opt out of the remainder of the season.

Florida State defensive back Jaiden Lars-Woodbey announced on Wednesday morning that he will transfer.
