Your Thoughts Thursday: Mike Norvell Will Win Seven or Eight Games in Year 1 at FSU

We hope everyone had a Happy New Year and has an even better 2020. How one Florida State program will fare in 2020 was in fact the topic of this week’s The Daily Nole Poll.

This week, we asked our social media followers how many games FSU would win in the first year under new head coach Mike Norvell. The top response was seven or eight.

That response garnered 52 percent of the vote from the 202 accounts that responded. 36 percent said eight or nine. Only 6 percent said 10 or more and just 5 percent said six or less.

Our Take
We’re going to go with the voters on this one.

There is reason to believe that Florida State will get better immediately with Norvell at the helm, but nine wins is probably the goal. Eight seems the most likely and acceptable number.

The non-conference is pretty tough as FSU plays Florida at home, West Virginia on a neutral field and at Boise State. From there, FSU faces Samford and only two teams that failed to make a bowl game in 2019 in NC State and Syracuse. Both of those contests are on the road.

It’s hard to see beating Clemson as a realistic goal, so that leaves ACC toss-ups with Boston College, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Wake Forest and Miami. Three of those are at home. If FSU goes 3-2 in the toss-ups, beats Syracuse, NC State and Samford, that makes six wins.

The other non-conference games could either see FSU go 1-2 or 2-1. Going 1-2 against West Virginia, Boise State and Florida would put the Seminoles at seven wins while going 2-1 would put them at eight. Even if they finished 7-5, they could get to eight wins with a bowl victory.

We’ll go with eight wins in 2020 with seven more likely than nine.
