Seminole Saturday Summary: Noles Ink 17 During Early Signing Period, FSU Softball Named Top Postseason Team of Decade
The first Early Signing Period for new Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was a successful one with the majority of the damage being done on Wednesday.
The Seminoles entered the day with the No. 26 overall class, according to the 247Sports Composite, and just 13 total commitments. FSU ended the day with 18 commitments, including 17 who signed and a class that ranks No. 21.
The Wednesday commitments included a pair of 4-star prospects in quarterback Chubba Purdy, who flipped from Louisville and wide receiver Bryan Robinson. FSU also added a pair of top-600 prospects in 3-star wide receiver Kentron Poitier and defensive end Josh Griffis. Griffis was once an FSU commitment, but flipped to Louisville before flipping back. The lone other addition was Australian punter Alex Mastromanno.
The lone unsigned commitment was 2-sport star Malachi Wideman. Wideman, a wide receiver on the gridiron and a guard on the hardwood, is expected to play both football and basketball at Florida State. Wideman will sign in February.
4-star defensive end Morven Joseph was the only player FSU had realistic hopes of signing this week that did not pick the Seminoles. The Lakeland native committed to Tennessee.
Florida State softball is more than a month away from beginning its 2020 season, but the Seminoles were recognized this week for their success in past seasons.
Softball American named FSU the No. 5 team of the 2010s and the No. 1 postseason team of the decade. The Seminoles won six ACC titles during the decade, including each of the last five. During the 2010s, FSU reached the Women’s College World Series three times and haven’t failed to reach the Super Regional round since 2012.
In 2018, FSU won its only national championship as a fastpitch program. The Seminoles won six straight elimination games to reach the championship round where they topped Washington in two games. FSU posted a record of 448-125-1 during the decade and has won at least 50 games in each of the last four and in five of the last six seasons.
Ahead of FSU for top team of the decade were Oklahoma, Florida, UCLA and Alabama. Florida State opens its 2020 season at home against North Carolina in the JoAnne Graf Classic on Feb. 7.
