Fun Fact Friday: FSU is Facing a First-Time Foe For Fourth Time in Five Week 1 Home Games

Despite their football successes over the last decade-plus — and Florida State’s for much longer — FSU and Boise State have never met before on the gridiron.

That was almost a tradition that carried into next year, given the threat of Hurricane Dorian, but instead of Saturday night in Jacksonville, the teams will meet Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee. The contest, originally slated for 7 p.m. EST on ESPN, will now start at noon EST and will be shown on ESPN News.

Saturday’s contest will mark the eighth time in the last 12 years that the Seminoles will begin the year at Doak Campbell Stadium. Since 2011, FSU has played five such games and now four of them will have come against first-time opponents.

The lone exception was last season’s 24-3 Labor Day loss to Virginia Tech. Prior to that, FSU’s last three Week 1 home games had come against first-time opponents and all were easy victories for the Seminoles.

The most recent was in 2015 as FSU crushed Texas State, 59-16. Prior to that, FSU beat Murray State 69-3 in 2012 and Louisiana-Monroe 34-0 in 2011.

Louisiana-Monroe was supposed to be Florida State’s home opener in Week 2 of both 2017 and 2019, but hurricanes changed that. In 2017, Hurricane Irma forced the contest to be rescheduled for the first weekend in December. The venue change this season means that the Seminoles will open with consecutive home games.
