Fun Fact Friday: FSU Soccer Has Won 12 Straight Openers

FSU athletics

The reigning national champions got the 2019 season started on the right foot Thursday.

No. 1 Florida State soccer won its 10th straight match dating back to last season on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over TCU. Senior forward Deyna Castellanos finished with a goal and an assist in the victory while freshman Heather Payne scored her first career goal to open the scoring.

The Seminoles dominated with 21 shots to just three for TCU. Of the Horned Frogs’ three shots, only one was on goal.

The victory was not only the 10th straight dating back to last season, but the 12th straight victory in a season opener. The last four season-opening victories have come by way of shutout.

The last loss for Florida State in an opener was a 2-1 overtime defeat at Portland to open the 2007 season. Scoring the game-winner for Portland in that one was Rachael Rapinoe. If that name sounds familiar, Rapinoe is the twin sister of U.S. World Cup star Megan Rapinoe.

In addition to winning 12 straight openers, FSU has started 2-0 in each of the last eight seasons. The Seminoles will try to keep that streak alive on Sunday when they host Wisconsin.
