It won’t be long before football season is here and Florida State will be tested right off the bat.

The Seminoles will open the season against Group of 5 powerhouse, Boise State, who won 10 games a season ago. The teams will kick the year off on Aug. 31 in Jacksonville.

In this week’s The Daily Nole Poll, we asked our social media followers which game from the first month of the season would be the most important. Overwhelmingly, respondents said the opener. There were 250 total responses.

The contest with the Broncos got 83 percent of the vote. The ACC opener at Virginia on Sept. 14 earned 13 percent. 3 percent said the Sept. 28 contest with NC State and just 1 percent picked the Louisville contest set for Sept. 21 in Tallahassee.

Our Take
As usual, we are going with our followers.

The opening contest between the Seminoles and the Broncos will set the tone for the 2019 season. A victory could serve as a big confidence builder, fresh off a disappointing 5-7 season in 2018. With a win, FSU should have a pretty good chance to start 5-0 before visiting reigning national champion Clemson.

FSU has underwhelmed in each of the last two seasons, going just a combined 12-13. In each case, the Seminoles lost their opener and in each case, the offense was stifled.

Last season, FSU was embarrassed at home by Virginia Tech, 24-3. The year prior, the Seminoles fell to eventual national champion Alabama by a 24-7 score.

FSU has finished ranked just four times ever after dropping its season opener with the last time coming in 2004. The Seminoles haven’t lost three straight openers since dropping four straight from 1973-76.
