The Daily Nole — April 9, 2019: FSU Softball Drops Heartbreaker to Louisville, Loses First ACC Series Since 2012

Lead Story

Florida State softball dropped its first ACC series in seven years on Monday night with a heartbreaking 10-9 walk-off loss to Louisville in the rubber game of a 3-game set.

Despite pushing across three runs in the first, FSU looked dead in the water entering its final at-bat. The Seminoles trailed 7-3 in the top of the seventh before Carsyn Gordon delivered an RBI single that kept the bases loaded. The next hitter, Sydney Sherrill, put FSU back in front with a grand slam before the Seminoles added another run in the frame.

Louisville however, responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rebecca Chung came up with a walk-off bases-clearing double. Sidney Melton had a 3-run triple for Louisville in the third before Maddy Newman added a 2-run triple an inning later. Caitlin Ferguson hit a 2-run home run to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 7-3 in the fifth.

Sherrill finished with five RBIs for FSU in the loss. She and Gordon each had two hits and two runs scored.

In addition to FSU softball, FSU women’s golf continued the Clemson Invitational on Monday.

FSU women’s golf wraps up the Clemson Invitational on Tuesday. FSU baseball will host Florida at 6 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra.

Virginia defeated Texas Tech 85-77 in overtime on Monday night to win college basketball’s national championship.

Conor Grady will be the starting pitcher for FSU against Florida on Tuesday night.

FSU hoops finished No. 13 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

FSU basketball forward Mfiondu Kabengele will forgo his redshirt junior season and enter the NBA Draft.

FSU baseball fell to rival Florida for an 11th straight time on Tuesday night, 3-1.
