For the second straight ACC game, Florida State saw a pitchers’ duel spin out of control. The Seminoles dropped the first game of a 3-game series with rival Miami in Coral Gables on Friday night, 11-0.

The contest was scoreless midway through before Alex Toral delivered the big blow for Miami (19-11). With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, FSU starting pitcher Drew Parrish left an 0-2 fastball right over the heart of the plate and Toral blasted it to center for a grand slam.

The Hurricanes would put the contest out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning with six runs. Freddy Zamora and J.P. Gates each delivered 2-run hits for Miami in the frame.

For the third time in as many ACC games, the Seminoles (18-11) were held to just four hits. Lead-off man Mike Salvatore was responsible for two of those. Raymond Gil was the only Miami player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Zamora finished with three RBIs and capped the scoring for Miami with an RBI groundout in the eighth.

After not losing until the NCAA Tournament last season, Drew Parrish took his third loss of the season on Friday night. Evan McKendry allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings for Miami to earn the win.

With the loss, FSU has dropped 11 of 17 since a 12-0 start. In ACC play, FSU has scored just one run in its last 26 innings. Miami will aim to capture the series when the teams meet on Saturday evening. The Hurricanes haven’t won the season series against FSU since 2008.
