FSU athletics

It’s Friday, Florida State fans. As your day and work week come to an end, keep it here for the latest in FSU athletics. The news and notes section of this post will be updated throughout the day.

Lead Story

What used to be the Johnny Bench National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award will now be named after a man more renowned in Tallahassee. That’s in honor of former Florida State catcher Buster Posey.

The change was announced Tuesday to the award that Posey won in 2008. The award annually goes to the nation’s top catcher. For the Seminoles as a junior in 2008, Posey hit .463 with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs while being named a Consensus All-American and the winner of the Golden Spikes Award.

Posey arrived at FSU as an infielder before moving to catcher and spent time as a closer for the Seminoles. In a 10-0 win over Savannah State in 2008, Posey played all nine positions in the game.

Now in his 10th season with Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, Posey is a 6-time All-Star, a 3-time World Series champion and the winner of the 2012 National League MVP. Posey was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2010, the batting champion in 2012 and has four Silver Sluggers and one Gold Glove to his name.
