One night after losing a slugfest to Boston College, Florida State evened the series on Saturday night in walk-off fashion on an RBI single off the bat of second baseman Mike Salvatore for a 4-3 victory.
FSU (18-8) managed just four hits on the evening, but none were bigger than the 1-out, walk-off single. Tim Becker walked to start the bottom of the ninth and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Matheu Nelson, setting the stage for Salvatore.
Boston College (13-13) threatened to go ahead in the top half of the inning, but FSU reliever Jonah Scolaro was able to work out of the bases-loaded jam to keep the contest even at 3. Scolaro worked three innings to pick up the win.
Prior to Salvatore’s game-winner, FSU had not scored since the first inning. The Seminoles drew first blood on an RBI groundout by Robby Martin before J.C. Flowers singled in a pair of runs. Boston College had 11 hits, but both teams had just one go for extra bases.
The Eagles got their first run in the sixth when Brian Dempsey scored on a wild pitch. Boston College evened the contest with two runs in the seventh. After Chris Galland scored on a throwing error, Dempsey’s RBI single tied the game.
Dempsey and outfielder Joe Suozzi each finished with three hits for Boston College in the loss. Two of the three runs for Boston College were unearned.
After a rough outing against Notre Dame last time out, FSU starting pitcher C.J. Van Eyk was solid, allowing just an unearned run on seven hits in six innings on Saturday night. Van Eyk struck out five and did not walk a batter. Joey Walsh took the loss for the Eagles.
The series will be decided on Sunday afternoon. With inclement weather expected to move in, first pitch was moved up one hour to noon EST.
