The Daily Nole — March 24, 2019: FSU to Get Sweet 16 Rematch vs. Gonzaga

Lead Story

For the second straight season, one of the West Region’s Sweet 16 match-ups will feature Florida State and Gonzaga.

After the fourth-seeded Seminoles topped Murray State on Saturday, No. 1 seed Gonzaga downed Baylor, 83-71. The Seminoles defeated the Bulldogs last season 75-60 to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in 25 years.

Gonzaga was without Killian Tillie in last season’s Sweet 16 victory for the Seminoles. Junior forward Brandon Clarke scored 36 points on 15-for-18 shooting and grabbed eight boards in Saturday’s win over Baylor. The teams are 1-1 all-time against one another with both games coming in the NCAA Tournament.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU hoops, FSU baseball split a doubleheader at Notre Dame on Saturday, winning the first game 7-1 before dropping second by a 12-3 score in South Bend. FSU swimming and diving wrapped up the women’s portion of the NCAA Championships. FSU softball rallied past NC State, 8-6. FSU women’s golf began the Evans Derby Invitational. FSU beach volleyball topped Stetson, 4-1.

On the Agenda

FSU women’s golf will continue the Evans Derby Invitational on Sunday. FSU baseball wraps up a 3-game set at Notre Dame at 11 a.m. EST while FSU softball closes a 3-game set with NC State at 12 p.m. EST. Both games air on ACC Network Extra. FSU women’s tennis will be at Syracuse. FSU women’s hoops takes on South Carolina in Charlotte in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 2 p.m. EST on ESPN2.

News and Notes

FSU men’s hoops wore patches honoring Michael Cofer, the late father of FSU forward Phil Cofer, before Saturday’s game with Murray State.

FSU’s win over Murray State on Saturday gives the Seminoles 29 for the season — a new program record.

FSU baseball defeated Notre Dame in 10 innings on Sunday, 3-1.

FSU women’s hoops fell to South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, 72-64.
