The Daily Nole — March 23, 2019: FSU Faces Murray State in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Lead Story

Fourth-seeded Florida State will look to book a second straight trip to the Sweet 16 on Saturday evening as the Seminoles take on No. 12 seed Murray State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Hartford. The Seminoles began the dance with a 76-69 win over Vermont while the Racers upset No. 5 seed Marquette, 83-64.

The star of the show for Murray State is projected NBA lottery pick Ja Morant. In Thursday’s win over Marquette, Morant became the first player to record a triple-double in the NCAA Tournament since 2010, finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 16 assists. Morant averaged 10 assists per game during the season to lead the country.

Mfiondu Kabengele, a redshirt sophomore, led the Seminoles with 21 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday’s win over Vermont. Terance Mann added 19 points and eight rebounds in the win. Shaq Buchanan, Tevin Brown and Darnell Cowart all average in double-figures scoring for the Racers — the Ohio Valley champions.

Thursday night’s contest begins at 6:10 p.m. EST and airs on TNT. The winner will face the winner of Gonzaga, the No. 1 seed in the West Region, and ninth-seeded Baylor.

Between the Lines

FSU women’s hoops opened the NCAA Tournament on Friday with a 70-67 win over Bucknell. FSU women’s swimming and diving continued the NCAA Championships. FSU beach volleyball defeated Arizona and Austin Peay. FSU women’s tennis defeated Boston College while the men topped Louisville — both by 4-3 scores. FSU softball blanked NC State in five innings, 9-0.

On the Agenda

In addition to the NCAA Tournament, FSU women’s swimming and diving will wrap up the NCAA Championships on Saturday. FSU beach volleyball will host Stetson. FSU women’s golf begins the Evans Derby Invitational. FSU baseball will play a doubleheader at Notre Dame, beginning at noon EST on ACC Network Extra. FSU softball hosts NC State at 1 p.m. EST on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU softball’s Meghan King tossed a second straight no-hitter in Friday’s win over NC State.

A GoFundMe was set up to cover medical and funeral expenses for the late Michael Cofer — the father of FSU hoops forward Phil Cofer.

FSU is currently a 4.5-point favorite over Murray State.

FSU baseball topped Notre Dame in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, 7-1. FSU was handled in the second game, 12-3.

FSU hoops routed Murray State 90-62 on Saturday to advance to a second straight Sweet 16.
