The Daily Nole — March 22, 2019: FSU’s Cofer Learns of Father Passing After NCAA Win

Celebrating a school-record for victories came with a heavy heart for Florida State.

Following Thursday’s 76-69 win over Vermont, FSU redshirt senior forward Phil Cofer learned of the passing of his father. Mike Cofer, a retired NFL player who spent 11 years with the Detroit Lions and made the Pro Bowl in 1988, had been battling an illness. He was 58 years old.

Cofer was nursing a foot injury and did not play in Thursday’s victory. According to reports, teammates were doing the best they could to provide support. There are no indications that Cofer won’t be with the team on Saturday in Hartford as it faces Murray State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to FSU’s NCAA Tournament win, FSU women’s swimming and diving continued the NCAA Championships.

On the Agenda

FSU women’s hoops will open the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Bucknell at 4:15 p.m. EST on ESPN2. FSU women’s swimming and diving will continue the NCAA Championships. FSU beach volleyball hosts both Arizona and Austin Peay. FSU women’s tennis will be at Boston College while the men visit Louisville. FSU softball opens a 3-game set with NC State while FSU baseball begins a 3-game series at Notre Dame. Both games on the diamond begin at 6 p.m. EST and air on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

12th-seeded Murray State defeated Marquette on Thursday, 83-64, to advance to face FSU in the second round.

FSU and Murray State will play Saturday at 6:10 p.m. EST on TNT.

FSU baseball’s scheduled Friday night contest at Notre Dame will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.

FSU women’s hoops opened the NCAA Tournament with a 70-67 win over Bucknell on Friday.
