Florida State used a 4-run eighth inning on Friday night to put some distance between itself and Mercer and take the first game of a 3-game set at Dick Howser Stadium, 9-5.

The Seminoles (8-0) entered the frame with a 5-3 lead, which was doubled on back-to-back RBI doubles from Elijah Cabell and Robby Martin. Cooper Swanson blasted a 2-run home run in his only at-bat of the night one batter later to highlight the big inning.

Martin continued to swing a hot bat for FSU, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. J.C. Flowers and Matheu Nelson each had a pair of hits in the victory while Cabell and Drew Mendoza also scored twice.

FSU was able to get to Mercer starter Sawyer Gipson with three runs in the first inning. After the teams traded runs in the second, the Bears (8-2) pulled to within one on a 2-run single by R.J. Yeager in the third. That would be all the scoring for Mercer until Garrett Wilkinson’s 2-run double in the ninth.

Collin Price had three of the eight Mercer hits in the loss. Kyle Dockus scored two of the Bears’ five runs.

Drew Parrish got his second win of the season for FSU, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings while walking two and striking out eight. Gipson allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings to take the loss for Mercer.
