The Daily Nole — Feb. 24, 2019: FSU Beach Volleyball Opens Season with Two Wins

Lead Story

After finishing one win shy of a national championship, Florida State beach volleyball opened the 2019 season on Saturday with two wins in the FSU Tournament.

The Seminoles began the day with a 5-0 win over Tulane in which three match victories came in straight sets. That was followed with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly. FSU wrapped up the day with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to LSU.

Olivia Powers and Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope clinched the dual for the Tigers with a 21-11, 21-15 victory over FSU’s Molly McBain and Kate Privett. The FSU tandem of Sara Putt and Payton Caffrey was the only duo for the Seminoles not to lose a match on Saturday.

Florida State will wrap up the FSU Tournament on Sunday with contests against South Carolina and Tampa.

Between the Lines

Aside from FSU beach volleyball, FSU men’s golf began the Seminole Intercollegiate on Saturday. FSU softball continued the Unconquered Invitational with a 13-0 win over Samford and a 14-2 victory over Lipscomb. In a doubleheader against Youngstown State, FSU baseball won the first game 24-2 and the second by a 7-4 margin. FSU men’s track and field claimed the ACC Indoor co-championship while the women finished in second. North Carolina defeated FSU hoops in Chapel Hill on Saturday, 77-59. FSU women’s swimming and diving finished sixth at the ACC Championships.

On the Agenda

In addition to beach volleyball, FSU men’s golf continues the Seminole Intercollegiate on Sunday. FSU women’s hoops will be at Miami at noon EST on ESPN2. FSU softball wraps up the Unconquered Invitational against Samford.

News and Notes

FSU basketball is currently fifth in the ACC standings.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former FSU quarterback E.J. Manuel.
