Lead Story
Florida State softball completed the St. Pete/Clearwater Invitational with a perfect 6-0 record. The Seminoles wrapped things up on Sunday with a 10-5 win over Florida Atlantic and a 5-2 victory over Tennessee in a match-up of top-10 teams.
FSU and FAU were actually tied 1-1 after four innings before the Seminoles blew things open with two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh. Zoe Casas homered, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Cali Harrod, Sydney Sherrill and Elizabeth Mason all had two hits in the win.
FSU capped the night with a 5-2 win over Tennessee. Harrod, Sherrill and Mason all homered for FSU, but it was a defensive play in center field that highlighted the victory. With FSU leading 5-2 in the fourth inning, Dani Morgan made a leaping catch to rob Tennessee’s Haley Bearden of what would have been a game-tying 3-run home run.
Meghan King allowed two runs on five hits while going the distance to get the win for the Seminoles. Catcher Ally Shipman drove in both Tennessee runs.
Between the Lines
In addition to the two softball wins, FSU baseball completed a 4-game sweep of Maine with a 9-1 victory on Sunday. FSU women’s hoops disposed of Pittsburgh, 78-46.
On the Agenda
There are no FSU athletic events scheduled for Monday.
News and Notes
The ACC will name players of the week for various sports.
FSU climbed one spot to No. 16 in the AP Poll and two spots to No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
FSU remained No. 6 in the Baseball America Poll and also remained put at No. 13 in the D1Baseball Poll. FSU rose one spot to No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll.
