The Daily Nole — Feb. 17, 2019: FSU Softball Sweeps Day 2 in St. Pete

Lead Story

Two days, four victories for Florida State softball. For the second day in a row, FSU swept the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational with a 9-1 win over LSU and a 17-6 victory over Minnesota on Saturday.

FSU needed just six innings to dispose of LSU, scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth to close the contest. Cali Harrod finished the game for FSU 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, including the 2-run homer that ended the contest. Carsyn Gordon was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Meghan King got the win after allowing just a run on five hits while striking out eight in five innings of work.

FSU opened and closed the contest against Minnesota with 5-run innings, mixing in a 4-spot in the fifth. Sydney Sherrill finished 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs and was one of three Seminoles to homer. Dani Morgan and Zoe Casas also left the yard. Both had three hits and two RBIs. Casas and Gordon each scored three runs.

With the pair of wins, FSU improves to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 at the invitational. FSU wraps things up with contests against Florida Atlantic and Tennessee on Sunday. Those games begin at 4 p.m. EST and 7 p.m. EST, respectively, and air on ESPN3 and ESPN2, respectively.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU softball, FSU hoops defeated Georgia Tech on Saturday, 69-47 in Atlanta. FSU baseball swept a doubleheader against Maine, winning the first game, 16-3 and the second 6-5 in walk-off fashion. FSU women’s tennis beat Miami 5-2 and Florida A&M, 4-1.

On the Agenda

In addition to FSU softball, FSU baseball wraps up a 4-game set with Maine at 1 p.m. EST. FSU women’s basketball hosts Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. EST. Both contests air on ACC Network Extra.

News and Notes

FSU hoops currently sits in sixth place in the ACC standings.

FSU basketball currently is 20th in the Ken Pomeroy rankings.

FSU baseball completed the 4-game sweep of Maine on Sunday with a 9-1 victory.
