The Daily Nole — Feb. 16, 2019: FSU Softball Tops No. 3 Oklahoma, Sweeps First Day in St. Pete

Lead Story

No. 1 Florida State began the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational on Friday with a pair of victories with the most notable being a 7-4 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma in the second game of the day. The Seminoles kicked things off with a 3-1 win over Ohio State.

Meghan King went the distance, allowing just a run on four hits while striking out 11. Anna Shelnutt and Leslie Farris each homered for FSU in the victory. Kaitlyn Coffman went yard for Ohio State’s only run.

FSU homered five times in the second game against Oklahoma. After FSU jumped to a 3-0 lead, Oklahoma scored four straight before FSU scored four straight runs to pull out a 7-4 victory.

Elizabeth Mason and Shelnutt hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to put the Seminoles ahead for good before Carsyn Gordon added some insurance with a 2-run blast an inning later. Also homering for Florida State in the victory were Dani Morgan and Cassidy Davis. Sydney Romero left the yard in the third inning for Oklahoma to give the Sooners their only lead of the day.

Between the Lines

In addition to FSU softball, FSU baseball used a combined no-hitter to top Maine on Friday night, 11-0.

On the Agenda

FSU softball continues the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational on Saturday with games against LSU at 1 p.m. EST and Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. EST. Both air on ESPN3. FSU baseball hosts Maine in a doubleheader with games beginning at 12 p.m. EST and 4 p.m. EST with both airing on ACC Network Extra. FSU basketball will visit Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. on Raycom Sports Network. FSU women’s tennis will host Florida A&M and Miami on Saturday.

FSU hoops is a 6-point favorite over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

FSU hoops defeated Georgia Tech on Saturday, 69-47 in Atlanta.

FSU baseball blasted Maine in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, 16-3.

FSU baseball completed the doubleheader sweep of Maine with a 6-5 walk-off victory on Saturday night.
