5-Star FSU CB Commit Akeem Dent Enrolling Early

Florida State football recruiting received some momentum on Saturday morning, when 5-star cornerback commit Akeem Dent announced on Twitter that he would shut down his recruitment and enroll early.

Dent was a longtime Florida State commit, first pledging to the Seminoles back in July 2017. The departure of head coach Jimbo Fisher impacted his recruitment initially, but he still preferred Florida State due to family connections. His brother Adarius Dent is walk-on receiver and his mother has always liked the university. Willie Taggart and his staff made him a priority the minute they were hired.

Typically we would not post an individual story for a commit who decided to enroll early. But given the rumors and speculation about Akeem Dent and his eventual landing spot, his decision warrants a dedicated piece.

Many predicted that Dent would eventually flip to either Alabama or Clemson, with Florida and Miami being other options. Despite many FSU insiders saying otherwise and a lack of interest from Dent, the rumors persisted, and his decision to not publicly sign early in December helped fester more. It turns out that he skipped the fanfare and elected to get on campus early.

Dent is a very physical cornerback who plays reminiscent of FSU greats like Xavier Rhodes and Jalen Ramsey. While he might not have the length of the latter, Dent’s tape shows an incredible athlete with some of the best burst you will see from a cornerback at any level. He regularly topples players much larger than him, and he rarely gets thrown on despite having a size disadvantage against bigger receivers. Dent is a true do-it-all cornerback that is well deserving of his 5-star rating.

Dent is the 15th signee of the 2019 FSU recruiting class and the highest rated. Four FSU commits remain unsigned: 4-star safety Nick Cross, 4-star cornerback Travis Jay, 4-star safety Brendan Gant, and 4-star defensive tackle Quashon Fuller.
