The Daily Nole — Dec. 17, 2018: Former FSU President Wetherell Dies at 72

Sunday was a day of mourning for those involved with Florida State University.

Former FSU president T.K. Wetherell died at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer on Sunday. A former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Wetherell served as president of Tallahassee Community College from 1995 to 2001 and at FSU from 2003 to 2010.

“As a veteran lawmaker, tireless supporter of higher education, and then as president, T.K. used his energy and intellect to not only lead FSU through a severe budget crisis but to make sure its flourished in so many ways,” FSU President John Thrasher said in a statement. “He was a remarkable person and a great friend.”

The Tallahassee Democrat reported on how Wetherell changed both Tallahassee schools. Wetherell also played running back and defensive back for the Seminoles from 1964-67 and in 1991, was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame.

FSU women’s hoops defeated Creighton on Sunday at home, 71-52.

On the Agenda

FSU men’s basketball will host Southeast Missouri State on Monday night. The contest begins at 7 p.m. EST and airs on ACC Network Extra.

FSU basketball dropped one spot in the AP Poll, falling from No. 10 to No. 11. FSU fell two spots to No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

FSU basketball defeated Southeast Missouri State on Monday night at the Tucker Center, 85-68.

FSU football 3-star junior college tackle Jay Williams on Monday.

3-star guard Maurice Smith flipped from Boston College to FSU on Monday.
