Florida State shored up part of its offensive line on Monday afternoon. 3-star JUCO tackle Jay Williams announced that he was committing to the Seminoles and would sign on Dec. 19.

Williams is a sleeper recruit that only started receiving attention in the past couple of months. That is not unusual for junior college recruits. Williams attends Grossmont College in Moreno Valley, California, where he is originally from. His first major offers came in late November after he posted an impressive season with the Griffins. Florida State offered him on Dec. 6 and brought him in for a visit on Friday.

What Williams needs to work on to succeed in Power 5 football is consistency and refining his skills. He has good size and power at 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds, and his tape shows a quick burst off the line in run blocking. His pass blocking also looks cleaned up, though it could be better.

On some plays, Williams look like a plug-and-play starter at left tackle. On others, he looks like a year-long project. He is an early enrollee, which should help with his development in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles beat out both the Texas Longhorns and the Indiana Hoosiers for his services. Williams is ranked by 247Sports as the eighth best JUCO offensive tackle and 64th best JUCO player overall, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Williams’ commitment brings the Florida State class to second in the ACC and 13th nationally, per the Composite. He is the second offensive line commit of the class, along with 4-star guard Dontae Lucas. More importantly, he is the first tackle ever since Charles Cross decommitted.

Florida State would like to add two more linemen to the class. Leading candidates are 4-star JUCO guard Desmond Bland, 3-star tackle Dawand Jones, and 3-star guard Maurice Smith.
